What is Muay Thai?

I personally found a love for this sport and training in 2009. I started at Pacific Ring Sports in Oakland CA and felt an immediate connection. Something about the use of multiple striking weapons was appealing - hands, forearms, elbows, legs, shins, knees - and the community was welcoming and inclusive. I encourage anyone, of any age and physical ability, to explore the very diverse world of martial arts. It’s an amazing and empowering way to inhabit your body. Below is a video for some of the workshops I’ve held to introduce people to this awesome “art of eight limbs”. So much respect for all the coaches and fighters out there who took the time to show me a very small pool of the larger knowledge that’s out there.

Offering new classes June 2016!

Greetings!

I'd like to let friends and clients know I'll be offering Bootcamp classes at Sergio Silva Jiu Jitsu on Park St in Alameda starting in June. It'll be a mix of martial arts drilling and strength training and sure to be a good butt kicker. Details are still being worked out, but we will most likely be having them twice a week in the late morning and will run 6-8 week long sessions. Let me know if you'd like to be kept posted!

In the mean time, here's a link to Sergio and Rebecca's website:

As well as an inspirational video of Juven Calderon on his health and weight loss journey!

Juven Calderon

Hello again!

I'm up and running and back on the web!

The past few months have been marked by significant change and transitions - I've ended two different long term jobs and am now venturing out on my own. It feels both liberating and a bit scary to be leaving places of security, but I'm learning to trust my instincts better and believe in myself.

To mark these changes, I've redesigned my website to better reflect my skills and services, focusing on the importance of a healthy balance between stretching and strengthening. I am currently training at Correctfit Performance located at 1726 Clement Ave in Alameda, and am offering private massage out of my home. Please contact me if you're interested in booking an appointment.

More updates will be coming soon, so check back!

Out with the old, and in with the new...

It's springtime, and positive change is in the air. I am officially no longer teaching classes or training clients at Bladium. Two years ago, my boss at Club One left to go run the personal training department at Bladium, and convinced me to follow him. I'm so glad I did. All of the people that I met there, both coworkers and members, we're wonderful to work with and I value the experiences that I had which helped motivate me to start my own business.

I'm very excited about what's coming up on the horizon - from teaching new classes, training new (and my old faithful) clients, to networking with other amazing health and fitness professionals, doors are open and the possibilities are endless!

Come and get your train on!

Strength and Conditioning Class - TOMORROW!

He has an amazing amount of drive and energy and he will get you to do things you never thought you could do. The class is free to PRS members and is $20 for a non-member. It will be awesome!!!!!!

It's Spring time! That means delicious dinner salads :)

What better time of year than now to enjoy, fresh, healthy salads as a light dinner option? With so many farmer's markets in the bay area (as well as various grocery stores), now is a good time to get into the habit of eating fresh greens and veggies towards the end of your day.

Here's a general rule of thumb when making healthy eating decisions:

  1. EAT BREAKFAST, wait, did you get that? ...EAT BREAKFAST - this means fruit, protein (eggs, meat, nuts, seeds), veggies (green smoothies rock), carbs (whole grains only please - oats, brown rice, whole wheat, etc.), and dairy. This is the start of your day, make it count, do it right. It will set the rest of your day on the path of rejuvenation or sluggishness. Make decisions that avoid processed foods, heavy saturated fats, and that are sweetened or overly salted. Go fresh!
  2. Eat in smaller amounts. Don't overdue it in one sitting. If you're hungry in another 30 minutes, have another small snack. Also, what are you eating? Is it sustaining you? Are you getting enough nutrients in your food? Think about writing down what you eat, how you eat, how it makes you feel. It may be interesting to see what type of patterns you have and how this affects your mood and energy levels.
  3. Lay off heavy carbs after 4pm. Your body typically starts to wind down later in the day so treat it right by avoiding eating heavy food that will just sit in your system late in the day, only to be stored in your reserves while you sleep it off. Get your carbs in earlier in the day when you really need it, to sustain your energy levels and keep you going during your more physically active times.
  4. Dinner should be light, protein and veggies. Remember, unless you're going out for a crazy night on the town, your body is ready to wind down and rest for the day, so it really shouldn't be taking in a whole lot of food at this point.
  5. HYDRATE! Drink water throughout the day. Feeling dizzy, fatigued, and out of sorts? Drink a glass of water, you may be dehydrated.
